Women to Watch is the National Museum of Women in the art’s exhibition program that features underrepresented and emerging women artists from each committee’s respective region.
Wyoming participated in this signature program for the first time in 2024, and will again for the next occurrence in 2027.
Women to Watch 2027: A Book Arts Revolution
In recognition of NMWA’s 40th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of Women to Watch, Women to Watch 2027 will showcase contemporary artists’ books—works of art in book form, which often encourage “readers” to rethink the nature of books in new or unexpected ways by fusing together a wide variety of materials and formats.
Artists’ books can appear in a wide variety of formats and materials, encompassing innovative uses of paper and print, sculptural works, and much more. This exhibition encourages audiences to rethink the nature of book arts by challenging assumptions about the medium and featuring works that combine approaches and techniques.
Women to Watch 2027: A Book Arts Revolution is the latest edition of the museum’s hallmark exhibition series—now in its 20th year—featuring national and international artists whose work is underrepresented on the global stage. Presented every two to three years, the series is developed through a unique collaboration between NMWA and its outreach committees. Located across the U.S. and around the globe, NMWA’s committees are volunteer advocacy groups that champion women and nonbinary artists beyond the museum’s walls in Washington, D.C. For the coming 2027 edition, Wyoming and others across the network are working with local curators to create shortlists of artists and hold feature exhibitions. Drawing upon all regions’ shortlists, NMWA liaison curator Elizabeth Ajunwa and guest curator Tia Blassingame will select the artists and works to exhibit at the museum in Washington, D.C., from April to August 2027.
Selection Process
WYNMWA selected Beth Venn, of the Neltje Center for Excellence in Creativity and the Arts, as consulting curator, who then submitted four Wyoming Women to Watch Book Artists to NMWA. One of these artists will be chosen to be represented in the national exhibit in 2027.
The Curatorial focus for Women to Watch 2027 was to explore the boundaries of what constitutes a book highlighting tactile, sculptural, and conceptual qualities. Criteria included: innovative use of materials; intentional disruption of reading conventions; engagement with political, poetic, or personal content; portfolio that includes 3-4 Artists’ Books.
Thank you to all Wyoming Artists who submitted their portfolios for consideration.
